STEAM FAIR

During the last 5 weeks, Kahikatea Hub have been working on their STEAM Projects. Student worked in groups or individually to create a challenge to investigate and experiment with. A wide range of challenges were chosen including Art, crystals, cars, knex and different oils. Each student had to write up their investigation and present it on a display board to show off at our very own STEAM Fair. Above are some of our projects

MOTAT Trip!

Our trip to MOTAT was super fun and very informative. We explored machines and how balance is an important aspect of how different parts work. So many interesting relics and semi modern products that were interactive and fun.

Ripper Rugby Legends!

Senior school had an inter-school winter sports competition recently. Here are some pictures from our Ripper Rugby games. We had two teams playing in separate draws and we were the only school to place in both. One team came 2nd the other 3rd. Our group of kids displayed great attitudes towards playing fair and having fun. We were all super supportive when playing or watching. Great day out!

A lot of our Hub whanau are part of our school Kapa Haka rōpū. One of our very talented students led the waiata, so great to see such confidence and pride when we sung at the opening of our schools new bike track.

Balance Structure

In teams students were given a random piece of polystyrene to decorate. We wanted their art to reflect their interests and our Hub as a group. When that was finished the challenge was to create a balanced sculpture within 1 minute! Watch all our groups create (sometimes destroy) works of fine art in the videos above. We have a semi-permanent sculpture that is held together with toothpicks. Students will have the opportunity to create their own unique sculpture for display throughout the year.

Straw Structures

Using only straws and tape, students were challenged to design and create a structure that could hold an apple then a rock. We focused on joinery during this task, working out ways to ensure our designs were strong and sturdy.

Balancing

This term we are investigating Balance in many different ways. Here we used plastic cups to build towers, the catch was we couldn't actually touch the cups! We had a piece of string and a rubber band as our only tools. All of us managed to complete the challenges in record time!

Egg Drop Challenge

The egg challenge was an eggcellent eggperiment! We made a shuttle to protect the egg that we were dropping from different heights. Some cracked and some didn't. We discovered that the higher the egg was dropped the more likelihood that the egg was going to crack. Or the higher you dropped the parachute the more likelihood it would work. It was cool when all the eggs cracked. It was a crack up.

Life cycle of a butterfly

We've been lucky to have swan plants right outside our classroom. During the warmer months we got to witness the life cycle of a butterfly multiple times!

Touch Rugby Superstars!

Our senior school took part in an inter school Summer Sports Competition, our Touch Rugby teams really enjoyed the event. In fact one of our teams placed first overall in the competition, well done everyone! Also a big thank you to our parent support on the day, always a great time.

T Shirts on Parade

Our final designs on display! So many different techniques were used to achieve these amazing results; sponge, hand and spray painting, black sharpies, dye and some students went further adding other elements like buttons. Fantastic work!

T Shirt Design Process

Term 1 was all about communication! We researched and discussed different forms of communication. Understanding how colour, imagery and language influenced the target audience was a key theme.

Here are some of the process photos from our Communication T shirt design project.

Papakura Central School Swimming

Papakura Central School competed at the Interschool North Counties Swimming Competition. Students from Kahikatea Hub represented the school as part of the team and showed great sportsmanship and teamwork. Our team did their best every race and always came out of the pool with a smile on their face. Take a look at some photos from the day. Congratulations to all our swimmers!
